Children's Dental Health: Bottle Water VS Tap Water

In recent years, consumption of bottle water has increased dramatically due to its convenience and portability. However, bottle water does not contain fluoride. While it is healthier then soda, many of our children are missing this vital component to the overall health of their teeth.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring compound that is primarily important for developing teeth because in proper doses, it helps strengthen the enamel and make unerupted and newly-erupted baby teeth resistant to decay.

Fluoride added to Little Elm and Frisco, Tx Water Supplies

In Little Elm and Frisco, TX, fluoride has been added to the drinking water so the public can obtain the greatest benefit.

Since it was first used in the 1960's, the overall cavity rate among children's baby teeth has declined significantly. In recent years, however, the cavity rate has gone up due to frequent consumption of sugary snacks and bottled water.

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association Recommendations

In order to keep our children's teeth healthy, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend systemic and topical approaches. Systemically, we should be aware of how much bottle water our children are getting, then supplement with tap water.

» Dr. Davis finds that many parents have questions about the fluoride content of home filtration systems. Although these systems vary, it is generally believed that many do not remove fluoride.

Topically, parents should not give children under age two toothpaste with fluoride.

Topically, parents should not give children under age two toothpaste with fluoride. For young children older then two, a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste is recommended with supervised brushing to ensure that children are not swallowing too much fluoride. Finally, if recommended by their dentist, children over age six can use fluoridated mouth rinses, assuming they do not swallow it.

Dr. Davis looks forward to discussing any additional concerns about your children's dental health and fluoride treatments. At Healthy Smiles Children's Dentistry, her dental team's goal is to ensuring that every child maintains healthy teeth and good oral hygiene.
